Question:

Dehumidifier & mold- how long until the current growth dies?

My landlord just installed a dehumidifier in the basement where we found small mold growth on anything wooden and on the floor. I got rid of everything that can be tossed with the exception of the floor of course. It's concrete. Anyways, if I run a dehumidifier non-stop, will the mold die? Will it be likely that it won't reappear if it still runs? Thanks!

  1. Probably a variant of cellar rot. The dehumidifier is only treating the symptom, not the cause. You should increase ventialtion and make sure that there is no leakage from anywhere (if this has just started you need to investigate why). Cut off the source of the water should help to prevent it reappearing. But you should treat with a proprietary mould killer or bleach at a pinch. The de humidifier is a bit of a waste of energy.

  2. The mold will not simply die.  It will need to be cleaned.  Some bleach diluted to 3 parts water should do the trick.
