The former AC Milan legend has slammed the mounting criticism over the Montenegrin’s performance in the clash against Chievo Verona.
Former AC Milan star, Dejan Savicevic, has leapt to the defence of Mirko Vucinic, stating that the Juventus forward is a great player.
Savicevic believes that the striker is recovering from an injury that is barring him from giving his best, and has urged the Juventus fans to back the under-fire star.
While talking to TMW the, the president of the Montenegrin Football Federation said:
“Mirko is not playing how he can. He’s having trouble with his knee and he’s not performing at his best. The player spent 45 minutes on the bench for the Montenegro friendly because of the same issue.”
Vucinic joined Juventus from AS Roma for €15million in the summer transfer window, and has scored only three goals in 20 matches this season. The 28-year old was jeered by angry Juve fans in the 1-1 draw against Chievo Verona in
their latest league game.
“He’s a great player, but the Juventus fans don’t forgive.”
The ex-fantasista also questioned Antonio Conte’s tactical use of the former Lecce star. He believes that the coach has failed to provide the Montenegrin with adequate opportunities in the attack, and has used him more in a defensive
role. Vucinic began the season with Juve as a centre-forward, but he has been asked to play wide-left in a 4-3-3 formation by the head-coach on numerous occasions.
“If he is always required to defend, to become a full-back, then he loses his freshness in attack. He needs to be allowed to play with more freedom. I think this is just a difficult moment for him and he’ll just need a goal to
get over it.”
Juventus’s crucial home game against the Flying Donkeys ended in a 1-1 stalemate, despite the hosts going ahead early in the game. Vucinic was blamed for being responsible for Chievo’s equaliser in the dying minutes of the match.
As a result of the draw, Juventus find themselves three points behind leaders, AC Milan, albeit having an extra game in hand.
