The former chairman of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Asif-c1993 were found guilty of spot fixing; however, he hoped that
such a scandal does not arise again.
"It is indeed a sad day for Pakistan cricket because our image has been tarnished but I hope this never happens again to us," said Butt while talking to the media reporters on Tuesday.
"I am confident that this will not happen again in Pakistan cricket. The PCB took several stringent measures to ensure every player and official was aware of how to conduct themselves and stay away from corrupt people," he added further.
Former Pakistan Test captain, Salman Butt and pace bowler Mohammad Asif were found guilty of conspiring to “obtain and accept corrupt money” in a Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 at Lord’s, in August last year.
The jury of the Southwark Crown Court, after 16 hours and 56 minutes of debate, reached the decision against players with a 10-2 majority.
Butt, Asif and their 19-year-old teammate, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Amir-c76675, were last year accused of conspiring to deliver some deliberate no balls in a Test match against England.
The trio has already been suspended from all cricket for a minimum of five years by an http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 tribunal after a hearing in Doha, in February this year.
The criminal charges against the suspended trio were set by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) of Britain.
The maximum punishment for accepting corrupt money Under the British law is imprisonment for seven years while the prison sentence for 'conspiracy to cheat' is two years detention maximum. Besides detention, the trio can also face heavy
financial penalties.
Amir, the youngest of the accused players, had pleaded guilty last month, so he did not face the trial.
Ijaz Butt appreciated Amir’s decision of admitting his mistake.
"I am happy that at least Amir had the sense to realise what he has done and admitted his mistake," said Butt.
