Dejected Rexy Mainaky insists on a rebuilding process to produce quality shuttlers – Badminton News
Malaysia’s Doubles coach, Rexy Mainaky, is dejected over the loss of the Malaysian team against Korea in the quarter-final of the Sudirman Cup, in China, on Thursday, May 26. The coach insists that Malaysia needs a rebuilding process to produce quality shuttlers.
Rexy said that the former top seed of Malaysia, Wong mew Choo, has created a huge gap in the Women’s Singles category, as the shuttler retired from competitive badminton and is currently working as a coach.
The Men’s Singles World Number One, Lee Chong Wei, is also on the verge of retirement as he has already made it clear that he will leave international badminton after the 2012 London Olympics. After Chong Wei, there is nobody to take his place, as other shuttlers are miles behind the top seed.
The coach is very disappointed with the performance of Malaysian shuttlers in the Sudirman Cup, as his team lost two important matches against Indonesia and Korea. It is an alarming situation for Malaysia, which is known one as one of the strong badminton nations in the world.
Rexy said, “We must start rebuilding from now. They players gave their all in the Sudirman Cup but it wasn't enough. Many are saying we will be weaker in 2013 because Chong Wei will no longer be around. That is true as it is difficult to replace someone like him.”
The coach further added, “But, if we start our rebuilding process from now, start sending more of our youngsters to tournaments, there is no reason why we cannot get stronger.”
Rexy says that emphasis should be on the back-up and young shuttlers, who are lacking the skills which are required to survive at the international level. In order to cope up with the shuttlers form China, Indonesia, Korea and Denmark, the Malaysian players need to be perfect in their technical and tactical aspects of the game.
The coach said that participation in more and more international tournaments will accelerate the learning process of the shuttlers by playing against the top players from different countries.
