Dekmeijere/Falconi trounce over Bouchard/Wozniak in the semi-finals – Texas Tennis Open 2012
Latvian-American duo Liga Dekmeijere and Irina Falconi rallied past Eugenie Bouchard and Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in the semi-finals match in Texas Tennis Open on Thursday. The Canadian couple gave its opponents Dekmeijere
and Falconi a chance to win in nearly one hour and 11 minutes in total, settling the final scores at 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 against its favour.
Dekmeijere and Falconi exhibited their excellent run of form in the initial set and held their serve to secure a 1-0 lead in the set. Out of three break points, the Canadian tandem utterly failed to claim a single one, whereas
their rivals bagged three of the five serve breaks to devastate them in the opener. The Canadians’ serve was comparatively weak and were able to secure barely one point. The Latvian-American pair consolidated on the bleakness of their opponents and race away
to 6-0, claiming the opening set.
The Canadian duo had a very low first serve percentage of 31 percent, converting just one of the five first serve points. On the other hand, Dekmeijere/ Falconi adopted a destructive game plan with a high first serve precision
of 68 percent, pocketing eight of 13 points. They also could not strike any ace nor did they double fault once.
In the second set, the game shifted its momentum and the right-handed Canadian duo managed to take advantage by winning the initial three games of the set to build the score to 3-0. Dekmeijere and Falconi nailed a break to
equalize the scores to 4-4 later on. Nonetheless, the Canadian couple battled past and secured the last two games, closing it with a 6-4 score.
The doubles match ended up in a super tie-break and the Latvian-American competitors emerged as the surprising winner. Initially, the Canadian participants were dominating but gradually lost their steam later to let their
opponents take the better of them. Their rivals equalized the scores to 6-all and eventually claimed victory at 10-8.
Both the duos were unable to attack each other with any ace during the set. The Canadians double faulted twice, sustaining their low serve percentage of 56 and winning nine of 14 points on it. The Latvian-American combination
had a consistently high first serve percentage of 83 percent but secured 10 of 14 points and from four break points, the couple banked just one.
Dekmeijere and Falconi will be contesting Maria Erakovic and Heather Watson in the final doubles match of the tournament.
