Del Bosque ignores Hodgson's plea to rest Torres
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has called on Spain coach Vicente del Bosque to leave Fernando Torres out of the squad for Spain's upcoming matches against Liechtenstein and Argentina.
Spain opens their 2012 European Championship qualifying campaign against Liechtenstein on Friday before flying to Buenos Aires for next Tuesday's friendly against Argentina.
Torres, Liverpool's star striker, barely recovered from the knee injury he sustained in April in time for the World Cup in South Africa.
Hodgson: Torres needs training
Two months later, he is still not at full fitness, and has yet to start a game for Liverpool this season.
"We hope Spain will not call upon his services and give him the chance to continue his pre-season because he needs training more than matches," Hodgson told The Mirror.
"It would be very nice if del Bosque would look kindly on us because there's no doubt that he would prosper from two weeks of serious training, hard training, to continue his pre-season work.
"If he's going to go away with them and play matches, that's quite a different kind of training and preparation. That's not what he requires at this moment in time and he requires a much more rigorous training programme."
Del Bosque summoned Torres on Monday
But despite Hodgson's plea for Torres to remain in rehabilitative training, del Bosque ignored the Liverpool boss's request and told Torres to report to Spain's training session in Madrid on Monday.
Torres, eager to improve for the national team after a lacklustre World Cup performance, has joined the team and will play in the matches if asked to do so.
Hodgson is far from the first Premier League manager to express concern over the inclusion of a not fully-fit player in an international game.
Manchester United and Arsenal managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are often at odds with their star players' national team managers.
