Question:

Del Potro, better than Andy?

For those who seen him play in the U.S. Open Series beating Roddick and Tommy Haas, don't you think this guy can pass Andy into the top 10 next year? This guy is 19 years old and give him a couple more years and he will definitely be the top 3, if not definitely top 10.

  1. From watching Del Potro play in the last few matches, he will definitely climb up to top 10. Murray can be within top 5, but he lacks consistency. I don't think Del Potro is better than Andy, plus Del Potro has not played with the real top 10 to prove me his greatness. Against Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Davydenko ? The US Open 2008 will test his potential.

  2. I don't think so, its annoying me that people are suggesting that Del Potro is the next big thing.

For one, he is not entering AMS Masters Series, if he wins those I will say he is, he is only entering ATP International Series and International Series Gold, not high grade tournaments with high-grade players. Ok, he has a winning streak; but look at the opponents he is playing, are these actual consistent players that have stacked up big titles and big wins recently? No! (Roddick included)

I'll admit breaking Roddick's serve is impressive to take a set 6-1 but did you see the match, Roddick was playing poor by his standards and his serve was nowhere to be seen.

When he beats a consistent Top 10 player in a Tournament, bar Roddick because he is going through a rough patch, then I will give him credit but until that happens, I only see him racking up minor titles and never succeeding on the big stage, just look at his AMS and Grand Slams record, it isn't pretty.

Again, all credit to Del Potro but until he starts stacking up those big wins in Big Tournaments, I only see him succeeding in ATP International Series and Gold Tournaments, and thus he will not gain enough points for a Top 10 position, which could happen but only if he fights the big fight.

  3. EVERYONE is better than Andy.

  4. never.-

  5. Definitely.  Roddick is good but many are much more diverse in their tennis abilities.  There are also up-and-comers or continuing developing journeymen who are taking advantage of their abilities on the tour, and at the same time, Roddick's game has long been found out by the tour and the tour has adapted.  This happens to every player.  Roddick also happened to peak when he was still new and his game was still not familiar.  That's why the key is for someone to keep adding more to their games to stay in the top group or to stay competitive.  This aspect certainly helps those who are more natural and fluid in their tennis and abilities.

  6. I don't know if Del Potro is a better player than Andy but I have a feeling that Roddick is on the way down and FAST! I wouldn't b surprised if he actually retired within 12 months.

  7. Something tells me he's not goint to be that kinda player. He has had alot good results lately whilst all the big players are gone to the olympics and it has given him confidence. But that is my opinion if he can continue this form in the major tournaments and get some big scalps then people might be thinking.

But yes he is definately a threat to the seeds at the us open as he is a dangerous lurker that might upset someone. Give him another 2 years before we can judge how good he might be.
