Del Potro meets David Ferrer in second rubber of Davis Cup Finals – Tennis News
Stage is set for the final showdown of the year in Seville, Spain, with the defending champion Spaniards taking on the well-prepared Argentine squad in the final of the Davis Cup on Friday. The ITF (International Tennis federation) mega event will be played on clay courts from 2nd to 4th of December to determine the champion of this year’s team event.
World number five and the home favourite, David Ferrer, will take on the 11th ranked Argentine spearhead, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the second singles rubber on Friday, with the world number two Rafael Nadal meeting Argentina’s Juan Monaco in the first singles match of the evening.
Team Spain will be eyeing to capture its third Davis Cup title in four year, while the Argentines are desperate to avenge their heart-breaking defeat of 2008 final at the hands of Spaniards at their home ground. The visitors nailed a 3-1 victory over Argentina on the hard courts of Mar del Plata in 2008 edition, despite the absence of their ace player, Nadal, to claim the glorious title.
Del Potro is leading the Argentine squad this time round and believes his side is fully prepared to take down the strong Team Spain on their home soil. With two of the most lethal players on the clay courts, Nadal and Ferrer, the Spaniards are clearly the hot favourites for the title this time round as well but Del Potro seemed not intimidated at all.
“The final will be different from Mar del Plata,” said del Potro, “If we are very, very focussed for the first matches on Friday, maybe we will have the chance to win.”
The Argentine spearhead will play the second singles rubber against the Spaniard who is 11-0 in Davis Cup rubbers being played on clay surface. The head-to-head series between the two men is levelled at 2-2, making the contest even thrilling. Del Potro and Ferrer bagged two ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) championship titles apiece in the 2011 season but the Argentine has been out of action since his appearance in Valencia in October. Ferrer has just reached home after his semi-final loss to the eventual champion, Roger Federer, at the season ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, in London.
The contest will be a treat to watch for the tennis fans and it is really hard to predict a winner among the two belligerent players at this time. The second singles rubber is of prime importance for both sides and will play a huge part in determining the ultimate winner of the Davis Cup Finals later on.
