Del Potro outclasses David Ferrer; Janowicz progresses as well – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Argentinean star, Juan Martin Del Potro, stunned the world number four, David Ferrer, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2013, third of the four Grand Slam events being held in London, United Kingdom.
The 24th seed, Jerzy Janowicz, on the other hand also outclassed his compatriot, Lukasz Kubot, in straight sets to reach semis on Wednesday.
The Argentine was quoted in an on-court interview after overpowering his opponent, “I think I played my best tennis of the tournament. I'm so, so happy to be in the semi-finals. I played my best tennis. I hit really well my forehand and serve. At the end I played my best forehand ever in Wimbledon. I'm lucky the ball was in. It was a big performance from me. I'm so, so happy with my level at this moment. I beat one of the best players this season.”
Del Potro drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. After Ferrer held his second serve, the Argentine stroke out the last three games and clicked the opener with a 6-2 win.
Seeded eighth in this event, Del Potro maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He smoothly slid his entire serves and got the breakthrough in the second last game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
The 24-year-old carried his rhythm in the third set. He failed to capitalise on any break opportunity but prevailed in the tie-breaker to claim the set with a 7-6(4) victory.
The world number eight will next take on the top seed, Novak Djokovic, in the semi-finals. Del Potro currently trails by 3-8 in the head-to-head series against the Serbian ace. However, the Argentine became victorious in their last meeting at the Indian Wells earlier this season. He also shocked Djokovic at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Olympics last season.
The Polish top ranked star, Janowicz, triumphed over his compatriot with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 win on Court number One.
“Right now, I'm the happiest person in the world,” said the beaming Pole in a courtside interview after stealing the show.
Next challenge for the 22-year-old is the last year’s runner-up, Andy Murray.
The Pole reflected about his upcoming match in a post match presser, “I have to be focused on my game. It will be a really cool match, a really nice atmosphere there.”
This was Janowicz 40th tour level win and he has reached the final four for the first time in a Grand Slam event.
