Delaware Handicap 2011 – Larry Jones trained Havre de Grace confident of win
Trainer Larry Jones said, “All is well. She worked this morning. It was just a little move forward towards her work next week, but all is well, and she is right on schedule”.
He was speaking about Havre de Grace. Larry Jones is the 2005 winner of the Delaware Handicap and is intending to send another filly to the race. This time he is sending Havre de Grace to the 74th running of the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap.
The Delaware Handicap is an American thoroughbred horse race, set to take place on July 15, 2011. The race is run for a distance of ten furlongs over a dirt track.
Havre de Grace, according to her trainer is the best horse the trainer has ever had. He said, “I even said that before we actually raced her the first time. I thought she was showing me signs of being a very special horse”.
The four-year old bay filly went into the care of Larry Jones at the end of her last year’s campaign. A brief peeping into the filly’s career is also necessary to see how she makes her way to the $750,000 Delaware Handicap.
Havre de Grace has been unbeaten in three starts. She has a career record of six wins from eleven starts. These also include her being runner-up thrice and she was twice third. She races for Rick Porter and Fox Hill Farms, and has lifetime earnings of $1,371,175.
The daughter of Saint Liam made a run at the Grade 3 Obeah Stakes in June 11, 2011. She was victorious in that race. She was able to get hold of a 2 ¼ length victory under the skilled jockey services of Gabriel Saez.
Havre de Grace was bred in Kentucky by Nancy S. Dillman. She also has the winning of a pair of Oaklawn Park Stakes to her claim. These include her scoring wins at the Grade 3 Azeri Stakes held on March 19, 2011. She beat Blind Luck by 3 ¼ lengths in the $150,000 event.
Her win at the Grade 3 Azeri at Oaklawn earned her a 105 Beyer figure. The Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap also had Havre de Grace victorious, it was held on April 15, 2011.
The filly may have enjoyed a slower uprising in her career as compared to other four-year old fillies, such as Blind Luck, and, Awesome Maria, but Havre de Grace, turned out to be a most fierce rival for Blind Luck.
She finished her 2010 season with a third place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic held on November 5, 2011. The sensational filly might be able to pull off a win in the Delaware Stakes.
