  1. A speech pathologist will be able to work with your child as well as give you information. You can find a speech pathologist at asha.org.

  2. Do you know what you mean by a 40 per cent delay in the cognitive domain?   Is your son of pre-school age?   Perhaps they mean that his cognitive development is 60% of what is typical of children his age.  That would mean, for example that at age five he functions like a three year old.   It sounds like a significant degree of delay.  The older your son was at the time of testing, the more likely the results are to be significant.  What did the evaluator explain to you?  Does your son have an IEP and receive special education services now?

  3. cognition is understanding

He understands/demonstrates the understanding at a 40% delay

if he is 40 months-40% delay would mean his cognitive ability equals taht of a 24 month old.

generally a delay of 25% or more in 2 areas or 33% in 1 area is significant

the areas are gross motor(jumping, walking, etc)

fine motor (hand skills like writing/holding a crayon

    social emotional (interactions)

    self help (dressing, eating, toileting)

    language (expressive and receptive

cognition (understanding of concepts/activities-from simple play skills to acadmeic skills)

a speech language pathologist treats language delays (which oftenaccompany cognitive delays)

A child under 3 is eligible for developmental intervention through teh Early Intervention System and will be seen by a teacher or equivelant (sometimes with the assistance of an aid)-ove 3-services witl be provided by a special eductaion teacher

  4. You mean he has learning difficulties?  Children learn and develop at different rates, so I don't really know what you mean by a 40% delay in the cognitive domain.

    Can you give more information.
