Delfina Acosta leads after round one of the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship’s girl division
Argentina’s Delfina Acosta carded a three-under par 68, in the opening round of the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship’s girl division, to take a one-stroke lead over Megan Khang of the United States.
The tournament is being staged at the Biltmore Golf Course, featuring a total of 33 amateurs from different parts of the world.
Acosta got off to a confident start, as she carded a birdie on the first hole that she played. She then added another two shots to her scorecard, by birdying the fifth and the sixth hole.
Thereafter, she lost a shot on the seventh hole, prior to finishing the front nine with a birdie on the ninth hole.
The back nine of the course witnessed her conceding two bogeys against the same number of birdies.
Talking to the reporters after completing her round, she expressed her pleasure in performing well in the first round.
According to the Argentine, her decent short game was the key to success in the initial phase of the tournament.
“I did not play well last week at the Doral tournament but I was able to find the problem on the range here,” Acosta said. “Today I made a commitment to playing one shot at a time, and when I missed greens (she missed seven) I did so on the side where I could save par. I also putted really well, which is always the secret to a low score”.
Khang, in the meantime, marked a brilliant start and surged to the top of the leaderboard after carding four birdies on the first 10 holes that she played.
However, a double bogey on the 11th hole, followed by two bogeys against the same number of birdies over the last four holes, dragged her down to the second spot on the leaderboard.
Despite making a poor finish, she was happy with her overall performance in the first round. She now plans to remain consistent in the remaining three rounds to finish the event on top of the leaderboard.
“I putted great but double-bogeyed 11 and dropped two more shots on the back nine. But to be where I am after that, well, I guess I’m happy,” she said.
