Delhi girls take the All India Junior Golf Tour Final by a Storm
Judging by the situation on the scoreboard of the All India Junior Golf Tour Final, the amateur golfers from the national capital are doing some serious business and there is simply no stopping them. Yes, these talented young girls are giving players from the rest of the country a good run for their money.
The familiar terrain, which had given the Bangalore boys, Chikkarangappa and Trishul Chinnappa, quite an advantage in the field and led to their eventual win in the male category, has not brought any such luck to the local girls. Instead, no matter which category you look at, the Delhi girls are dominating the field and that too by quite a margin.
Gurbani Singh’s name seems to stand out the most. The 15-year-old Delhi Golf club member was ahead on the leader board in the A&B Category with a score of 2 over 74, but what really impressed the audience were the effortless and accurate swings of the youngster. She remained focused throughout the tournament, kept analyzing her thought and it all paid off when she finished first in the event.
However, even though Gurbani and the other Delhi girls are enjoying their unchallenged domination at the event, they have not forgotten the Asian Games mess where the finished as the bottom most team. Now, they realise that when it comes to international standards, high scores are something to worry about.
Another example of an outstanding player is Seher Atwal, who topped the category C pickings, but with a high score of 6 over 78. Ridhima Dilawari, another Delhi girl, was just behind her with an 8 over 80.
Indeed the Delhi girls might walk away with the highest accolades and wins in all categories, but if they want to translate this relatively smaller victory in the international circuit as well, they have quite a long way to go. These girls have the drive, talent and motivation to take the world by a storm. All they need is a little more global exposure and some fine tuning of their skills, preferably by an international coach.
The time is ripe for the Indians to venture into golf with just as much enthusiasm as they did with cricket and tennis.
