Question:

Delivery charge and tipping?

by  |  earlier

Pizza hut just charged me $1.85 for a delivery charge. Even if the driver doesn't get this money, I still don't feel like I should tip him. Would it be awkward not to? I'm a poor college student as it is, and a single effin pizza turned out to be over 15 bucks. Do the drivers still expect a tip? And are you supposed to?

  1. Personally, if I was in your financial position (and actually I am), I wouldn't tip him either.  There is nothing you can do about the delivery charge, however.  I pay $1.00 delivery fee from my favorite pizza place.  And Pizza Hut doesn't even deliver where I'm from.  LOL!

But if I were a person who was financially stable, then I wouldn't care to tip him because that's how he makes the majority of his hourly wage.  People who work for tips get paid a federal minimum wage of $2.13 an hour plus tips.  If the employees tips plus the $2.13 an hour do not equal to be the federal minumum wage of $6.55, then the employer must make up the difference.

However, in my experiece working for a call center under a contract for the U.S. Department of Labor, I discovered the majority of employees complaints pertained to their employer not making up the difference.  This means the tips the employees make are really their sole income in a sense.  So anyways, like I said, I would only tip if I could afford to. If the employee has earned it depends on how much they get.  Hope this helps.

  2. I never heard of that, but do what we do. Drive down the block and pick up your pizza after you order it by phone, avoiding any charges...except now you have to worry about gas prices huh.

  3. I would tip or pick the pizza up yourself. I worked and delivered pizzas last year.  I didn't get paid by the hour just got paid 2.00 for delivery charge and what tips I got.  I had someone want me to bring pizza in and sit it on their kitchen counter and still did not give me a tip. Thinking back as a woman I should of not had brought the pizza inside. I was surprised on how many people picked up their pizza. Papa John's used to have free delivery but now they don't. I do like the drive up windows at Domino's and pizza hut.

  4. yes you must tip him cause he lives off the tips and makes no money otherwise he maybe in school to like i was lol

  5. Pick up your own pizza.  How would you feel if you lost money going to work?  No one wants to pay out of their own pocket to bring you a pizza.  Gas is really expensive, and trust me Pizza Hut is not filling this guy's gas tank.  If you cannot afford to eat out, use the microwave.

  6. Yes..of course...if you know the driver isnt getting the money and gas is 4bucks a gallon...yes you tip...

If you dont have money to tip...dont order out... these guys are working for a living just like you do.

  7. two dollar tip! give it to him in change and put all of it in a ziploc bag, ive done that before, you get rid of some loose change too

  8. it should feel awkward not tipping because it is rude

tip the b*****d or pick up your food yourself geesh

would you opt to not tip a waitress because there is a hostess and busser and no free refills????

don't hurt the delivery boy   he is not making much money as it is......

yes you are supposed to tip or like I said before go get it yourself.......sorry

  9. My pizza shoppe also charges a delivery fee. However, with the cost of gas, I don't feel it to be enough.  I give 'him' another $2!

If I can't be fair in pricing to someone who is trying to earn some additional money, I would just go pickup the pizza myself.

  10. Sorry but you need to tip the driver. To save money make your own pizza. It's so easy.

  11. The driver is struggling just like you and many others are. Yes a tip is normal 2 bucks usually.
