Dell Inspiron 8600 - overheating and shutting down

Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop running Windows XP 
is overheating and shutting down after 2-3 hours. 
A message on the screen appears indicating that it was necessary
to prevent damage to the computer.
The fan is working. 
Restarting is possible.
