Question:

Dell Laptop + Linksys Wireless G (WRT54G2) Router = no internet?

When I first started I connected the computer directly to the cable modem and had internet access. No problems. I added the (highly recommended) Linksys Router to the mix and Windows Vista sees it and says it's successfully connected but I can't access the router OR the internet. Neither will work.

I did a release/renew for the IP and now nothing works. Even if I go back to connecting directly to the modem and take the router out of the picture, it won't connect. If I try to release/renew the ip it tells me that the "operation needs elevation".

Anyone have any luck getting this S****y dell to connect to a linksys router?

  1. linksys gave us 2 years of grief and filled a notebook with all the gawd-dmned fixes.

I shoved it in the closet.

Then I plugged in my  airport express and set up 11 computers in 50 minutes.

It has been trouble free since January. No fixes, tweaks, upgrades, re-installing. Nothing.

It works great on ll 11 computers.

  2. You need to login with admin privileges on the computer first.

  3. run command prompt

    type: ping www.google.com

if the ping fails, you definitley have no internet.

Go to>Start>Network>Right click the modem>Go to View device webpage then sort out the settings. Maybe try selecting a different connection type: 'Dynamic IP address' setting for most cable broadband
