Dell inspiron 9300 laptop monitor problems

Question

My laptop only has about 6 inches of viewable space (on a 17 inch monitor) The rest of it is black with lots of vertical multi colored lines running thru it. Also parts will garble on it. I am hoping against hope it is not the monitor since I have been laid off and can not afford another one. Maybe an inverter or cable?? thanks in advance!
