Dell laptop does not switch to battery power

Question

The battery gets charged ( I've switched between 2 batteries to cehck the same). When I check through the Power Meter, it shows me how much charge is remaining on the battery. But the moment AC power goes, the laptop switches off. Local laptop repair guy doesnt want to touch it since it's too old (!). Machine is otherwise in excellent shape, so I do not want to discard it.
