Delmon Young claims ALCS Most Valuable Player Award – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Detroit Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland is an extremely experienced professional. A few hours before the start of American League Championships Series, he sat behind the dugout at Yankee Stadium in New York, explaining to his assistants how important it was
to include Delmon Young to the batting line-up.
Leyland was absolutely right. The Tigers have already progressed to the World Series finals and Young played a key role in Tigers 4-0 ALCS over against their American League rivals New York Yankees.
Young displayed high quality hitting skills throughout the season. For his heroic part in Tigers’ first American League pennant since 2006, he was named the Most Valuable Player of ALCS. When Young’s team-mates were partying on the field and inside the clubhouse,
he was smiling with the trophy in his hand.
When reporters asked him about earning a place in World Series finals, Young could not control his emotions and started to talk about his boyhood dreams. Born in Alabama, Young always wanted to beat the Yankees and that is what he did in the best of seven
ALCS.
"As a child growing up," Young said, "your dream is always winning Game 7 in the World Series -- walk-off hit. So it's fun knowing you get to go there."
"Unbelievable," Jim Leyland said after Detroit thrashed the Yankees comfortably 8-1 in Game 4. "He got hot again this year at the right time for us. He stepped it up under the big lights. Not that they aren't bright all year, but they are a little brighter
this time of year."
"My childhood dream was playing shortstop next to Chipper Jones," he further added, "trying to beat the Yankees in the World Series."
Leyland and his men are now awaiting the winner of National League Championship Series. San Francisco Giants or the St. Louis Cardinals, it seems the Tigers are ready to face any challenge that comes their way.
They now have five days off before the World Series begins on Wednesday. Surely, Young will be looking to take his sensational hitting form into the World Series finals to help the Tigers end their 28-year wait.
