Deloitte Ladies Open: Ursula Wikstrom finishes runner-up after putting up a tough fight against leader
Finnish Ursula Wikstrom, who grabbed a clubhouse lead in the middle of the second round of the Deloitte Ladies Open, tumbled to the second spot in the final round, as she posted a 70.
Wikstrom played a superb game right from the start of the three-day tournament, held at Golfclub Broekpolder Rotterdam, Netherlands, and picked up pace in the second round to register a solid 68 on the leaderboard.
The Finnish star grew confident after piling up a big score, but her nearest rival, Carlota Ciganda, surged ahead of her after she posted a 69 to grab the coveted title.
Analysts said that Wikstrom could have displayed an even better performance. However, she could not judge the ball on some holes in the concluding round.
The second round started in a flurry of excitement, as the Finn was sure that she would extend her lead into the final round. Other players also tried to give a tough time to the top-ranked contenders, but
none of them could come close to beating the leaders.
Golf commentators said that the tournament was perfect in all respects, as the weather conditions were quite favourable throughout the three days. Moreover, Dutch fans also showed abundant support to star performances,
making the match livelier.
Commentators pointed out that the final results have proved all the predictions wrong, as most of the hot favourites finished outside the top 10.
Wikstrom moved into the final round with plenty of confidence, confident that she would do her best against the winner.
She parred the first three holes and shot two back-to-back birdies. She came close to shooting a bogey on the par-5 6th, but judged the ball on putting green effectively and parred the hole.
On the other hand, Ciganda found herself in a more comfortable situation. Speaking to the media about her amazing performance, the Spanish star said that she was happy to record her first LET triumph. She pointed
out that she was particularly happy after beating the big names.
“On the back nine I missed three putts of one and a half metres long, but then I also made some good ones so I think golf equals everything at the end and so I’m happy with the round,” the 22-year-old star
said.
