Delonte West believes teams shouldn’t rely upon 1 or 2 Superstars - NBA Update
Dallas Mavericks guard Delonte West does not believe in the idea of handing over the fate of a team to just two or three guys. His comments came in relation to the struggles of the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinal
series against the Indiana Pacers.
Unlike Heat, Indiana doesn’t have their roster oozing with mega superstars, but they have still managed to give Miami a run for their money and at one point led the series 2-1.
West differed with the idea of assembling a team around so called ‘superstars’. The guard put his weight behind the argument that sharing the responsibility is paramount for the team to succeed;
"What you're seeing in these playoffs is that the idea of 'team' is back in the NBA,'' West said.”The collective team is bigger than the one or two great players. You look at the Spurs and Indiana; those teams are playing like
teams”. West said. "And I think that's good for the NBA. I think looking forward, the NBA is going to be at its greatest the next couple years because it's going to be anybody's game. To me, that makes the league more exciting.''
Miami have a star troika in LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. After Bosh was ruled out of the series, Wade and James have been left as the only scoring options and the rest of the cast has just refused to chip in on the
offense.
Amongst the Big Three, West shares a bit of history with James. They both used to play for Cleveland Cavaliers after the rumoured affair with LeBron's mother, West made a quick exit from the franchise. He played for Boston for
some time, before West joining the Dallas Mavericks.
However, he did praise the Heat for making it through difficult times and tipped them to get even better;
“They're playing, I'm not, and they're getting better,''
West is heading into the free agency this summer and after running (what he claimed) a successful season, he is hoping to return to the Mavs. He averaged 9.6 points in the regular season and 7.5 point in the playoffs.
In his 8 years of professional career he made it into the post season 6 times. Mavs’, the defending champs were humiliated by Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs first round. After being ousted by a team, both young and inexperienced,
Dallas are looking forward to make major changes in their roster and the irony is that they want to go the Miami Heat way.
Only the time will decide if the 28 year old guard gets another chance to run along with Dallas next season.
