Demand for PlayStation 3 in the UK boosted by price drop, PlayStation Vita to allow for more creativity
PlayStation 3 consoles are selling like hot cakes on a cold winter’s day in the United Kingdom, as retailers struggle to meet the surge in demand for the home entertainment system.
The drop in price has been highlighted as the major reason for the sudden change in the market forces phenomenon, as retailers have slashed prices for the 160GB model by as much as £90.
GAME, one of the many retailers, was responsible for the largest price cut, slashing prices from £249.99 to £159.99, a price cut of £90. Play.com was not as generous but still reduced its price to £199.00.
The result has been a shortage of 160GB PlayStation 3 models as consumers seem to want to make the most out of the deal.
This has increased speculation that Sony is looking to discontinue production of the 160GB model and replace it with another. However the consumer electronics giant denied these rumours explaining that it is just a case of aggressive marketing.
A spokesperson for Sony aptly described the situation, "Retail are currently being very aggressive with the price of the 160GB model to the obvious advantage of consumers. This means demand is currently high and in some areas, stock is lower than we'd like.
That said, we will be addressing this with additional shipments in the very near future."
So it seems that the shortage in supply may just be temporary as Sony looks to match supply with demand.
While this price cut seems to be prompted by the retailers, Sony is expected to officially announce its own price cut in PlayStation 3 consoles during GamesCom, which is set to take place on the 17th of August.
Whichever way one looks at, it seems a great time to considering purchasing a PlayStation 3 console.
Moving on from home consoles, to the next generation of handheld, portable gaming devices, it seems that developers seem fairly excited with the possibilities the PlayStation Vita opens up in terms of creativity.
According to Dani Sanchez-Crespo, the CEO of games developer Novarama, developers like himself have more room to be creative in their approach to designing video games.
"These are exciting times to be part of the Sony family. With PSVita on the horizon, the possibilities for creativity are endless," declared Sanchez-Crespo.
The developer went one step further when he boldly stated, “Broadly speaking, we want to make the impossible possible,”
Gamers can expect more news on the PlayStation Vita at this year’s GamesCom, along with the rumoured price cut for PlayStation 3 consoles.
