Former Zenit St. Petersburg central midfielder, Maksim Demenko, has tipped his former club to retain the Russian Premier League title this season after cutting past Anzhi Makhachkala and CSKA Moscow on the league table.
As things stand, the St. Petersburg club are at the 3rd spot on the league table with 38 points, three points behind the mega rich Dagestani club and trail the top-spot by massive five points.
However, Demenko is of the belief that the defending league champions are capable of delivering much more this season despite dropping too many points at the earlier part of the ongoing campaign.
Speaking on Luciano Spalletti, Demenko insisted that the Italian tactician is the right man for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 and backed him to win more silverware at Petrovsky stadium.
The fact that the St. Petersburg club have been drawn in the UEFA Europa League round-of-16 against the likes of European giants, Liverpool FC, makes Demenko every reason to get worried.
However, he was of the view that Zenit can defeat the English Premier League club should they follow Spalletti’s instructions and gave the example of the Russian outfit’s 1-0 win in the UEFA Champions League against AC Milan at San Siro.
"Liverpool are a strong team but Zenit have extensive experience in preparation for the playoffs European cup, so it is unlikely that the combination of the two tournaments will affect them. Another thing is that a successful outcome of the confrontation will
give Zenit a strong and positive momentum in the championship.”
“The second part of the season promises to be very interesting. The struggle in the top three will be very hard, CSKA will try to retain the leading spot while Anzhi will try to regain a foothold at the top.” The former Spartak Moscow man was quoted as saying.
The 36-year-old went on to advise the Meshki to work harder than before when they return from the winter break in March if they are to get themselves back at the top just like last season.
