  1. Please remember that nursing homes are not "bad places where the elderly are forgotten."

They have trained educated staff to deal with people who have dementia.  Sun-downers is difficult to deal with because of the radical change in personality that _can_ occur.  Sometimes people just wander.  But your mom deserves to have professional care and at this point you would be doing her a favor to live in a facility where people are able to give her the care she really needs.  She will still have Sun-Downers but she and people around her will be safer.

  2. i can relate because i have a grandma who has dementia (Alzheimers) but she isn't violent. she's just very confused and doesn't remember her past or names but she remembers faces. i know it's hard. what i recommend is that you make sure the house is very neat and clean so that she cannot fall. we made that mistake with my grandmother and she fell. also, i would keep her room lit. maybe a night light?

here are some tips from this website - http://ezinearticles.com/?Alzheimers-and...

    1. Before darkness approaches, make sure the house is well lit. The brightness inside, reduces the feeling of time passing.

    2. Buy mini blinds that are a bright color. This also gives the illusion of daylight.

    3. Think of what your loved one used to do at the time she begins to get anxious. Was it cook? Take her into the kitchen and give her something to do. Who knows? It might calm her down.

    4. Calming, less exciting activities as the afternoon progresses.
