Question:

Demerol Withdrawal??

I just got my wisdom teeth removed a few days ago. Beside some bleeding and a bit of pain at the beginning, I am just swollen but with little to no pain now. My doctor prescribed me Demerol, which did next to nothing but make me sleepy. So instead of taking it every 4 hours, I tapered off to taking it every 8, and now I haven't taken it since. And still no pain, which is good. but I am worried, because now I'm feeling really nauseous and shaky. I've been warned about withdrawal symptoms, but I was only taking it regularly for a couple of days. Any suggestions as to whats going on?

  1. What is going on is you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Having demerol stimulate endorphins your brain stopped making them and when you quit taking demerol you no longer had those endorphins in your system. Once your brain realizes this it will start producing them again and you will be back to normal. One thing does puzzle me though it is highly unlikely for a doctor to prescribe demerol for wisdom teeth removal.
