Demetrious Johnson halts Ian McCall's progression towards UFC flyweight title – UFC News
Demetrious Johnson has finally grabbed the opportunity and sealed his place in the finals of the UFC flyweight tourney by collecting an impressive unanimous decision against the underdog Ian McCall, in a three-round bout held on June 8, 2012.
The Kentucky proud will now take on Joseph Benavidez most probably in the upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view to decide as to who will engrave his name on the very first UFC flyweight title.
Ian and Demetrius headlined the ‘UFC on FX 3: Johnson vs. McCall’ pay-per-view which was televised live on FX channel from the octagon set up at BankAtlantic Center situated in Sunrise, Florida, United States.
Ian and Johnson feud got controversial when in their last meeting an improper scoring tarnished the decision. As a result the bout was eventually denoted a draw. A lot of fuss was made that irked UFC President Dana White a lot.
Within a few days after ‘UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann’ special edition, Dana announced that the bout will take place at UFC on FX3. The clash started and Demetrius proved that he was the better man and that the underdog status is always not the favourable
one.
Johnson, also known as ‘The Mighty Mouse’, was entering in his careers 18th bout and boasted 14 wins. Basically a submission specialist and a ground game lover, Demetrius has nailed three opponents by knockout, six by submission and five by decision.
His Friday night opponent, Ian, also known as ‘Uncle Creepy’, who claimed after his last encounter with Johnson that he was the genuine winner, was entering in his 15th career bout.
McCall, 27, has nailed four opponents by knockout, three by submission, and another four by decision. This was Ian’s second UFC career bout and quite frankly a dismal one. From the very first round, Johnson was the one who started things off in an authoritative
way and connected a thunderous jab which flattened Ian on the octagon floor.
The first round was emphatically dominated by Johnson in fact it was the Kentucky brawler who collected the first takedown attempt but Ian was swift and resilient and got back on his feet after a few seconds.
The second round was owned by Ian who started things off with a series of jabs that connected well. McCall impressively replied to Johnson’s first round take down and nailed Demetrius on the octagon floor by his own take down.
During the third decisive round, it was Demetrius who controlled the pace and eventually went on to win the bout via unanimous decision. After becoming the number one contender for the newly introduced flyweight title, Johnson stated, “He's a tough fighter.
The toughest fighter I've ever fought in the UFC. I felt good. This time, I went back to old school and doing what I did in training for eight weeks. I'm looking forward to (the title fight). Joseph's a killer. It's going to be a great fight with me and him.”
With this win Johnson will now take on Joseph for the flyweight title to constitute the first ever flyweight title bout in UFC.
