Question:

Demobilization and World War II from American soldiers' perspectives?

I'm in the preliminary stages of research for my master's thesis, and could use a little bit of direction. Basically, I'm wanting to look at what soldiers' expectations were for post-war America, as well as their hopes, fears, etc. So far I've found a lot of useful articles and letters in the YANK series, and as soon as I get my hands on Stars and Stripes that'll be my next source to tackle. I also, of course, will have to look at lots of memoirs.

So basically what I'm asking is: what are some of the most essential sources you can think of for me to start with?

As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention -- I'm primarily focusing on the Army, but am willing to look at anything from all the military branches.

  1. The archives of both Time and Life magazines.

You might also consider contacting the owner/curator of the HMS Queen Mary.  She was used to transport a good number of the troops home.  As I recall, the bar at the fantail has a number of dings in the brass railing.  When I asked, it was said that those marks came from the bayonets.  I personally find it difficult to believe that the men would remain armed with that much time in transport.  Best of luck.  -- Doc
