  1. In the UK, policies and social institutions have been founded upon the assumption of the nuclear male breadwinner family, consisting of two married (male and female) parents living in a household with their children (McDonald, 2000). Within the male breadwinner family, marriage is viewed as a contract between husband and wife, in which roles are divided between breadwinner (male) and carer (female). Women are considered to be largely dependent on marriage and their husbands for reasons of economic necessity. Moreover, marriage is considered an institution in which love, s*x, and above all, childbearing takes place. However, since the 1960s with the contraceptive revolution, the equal opportunities revolution, the increase in individualism and the expansion of the white collar occupations and the creation of jobs for secondary earners, women have began asserting their rights within the labour market and education - signified by the increase in female participation in the labour market and a higher degree of gender equity within these institutions (McDonald, 2000)(see chapter X). These changes in the labour market are contradictory to those that social policies and institutions are founded on and this has led to changes in family formation and childbearing. The account below discusses these changes with particular emphasis on the situation in the 1990s.

  2. You may need access to government data bases, through your school might be best.  If you are looking at the relationship between demographic changes and childrens lives, you will need to pick what aspects if kids lives to consider.  So if you compared India and the USA for example,  1907, and now, that would be interesting.   You have to pick your area of interest, like the USA or one region for example.  You may also want to compare some racial groups as well.   infant mortality rates have dropped a lot, life span in general has lengthened.  What we die from has been changing.   So in 1907 you could see family size is larger than now... and how would that affect child rearing.  You might see less single parent families then from now...   Could compare g*y marriage trends or g*y unions, that is a big difference from the past to now.   You could look at place of residence, and see if increased urbanization, and population density would affect the social environment of kids over time.  Good topic.
