Demon’s Souls and why it is a must play for every gamer!
Dark Souls has only been out a few days ago and it is already being hailed as a masterpiece in the world of gaming. Yet, at the same time, a number or rather a majority of gamers, especially those on the Xbox 360, do not seem to agree. The reason is simple,
if gamers wish to understand Dark Souls, then playing Demon’s Souls may not be a necessity as such, but it does come highly recommended.
Released in 2009, Demon’s Souls took the norms and practices of the gaming world and turned them on their heads. Gaming was all about being the best and destroying everything in one’s path. There had tutorials galore and gamers knew what they were up against
and how to take it down. They had the comfort of checkpoints and saves and to be honest, it almost seem pampered to an extent.
Then, Demon’s Souls came with an ‘impossible’ difficulty. Yet, that in itself is an unfair label for the game that is so much more than just an average game amped up on difficulty. It is a much, much deeper an experience than that.
What Demon’s Souls was and still is, is unforgiving and punishing, but fair; the difficulty comes from these factors. A single mistake or a rash decision sends players back to the start of the level where they have to do things all over again.
It adds an immense amount of tension and gets one’s heart beating so fast at times that Olympics athletes might be jealous. Beating the countless enemies is a challenge, but not impossible at the least. Hollywood style Call of Duty tactics will not work
here, nor will the slash ‘em and bash ‘em ethos of God of War.
Instead gamers need to pick their battles and be ready to defend and run away, as much as they attack. It goes against everything gamers have been conditioned to until now, but it shows just how deep a gaming experience can be. For those who think this game
is hard, it is only so when one approaches it with the wrong mindset.
The game also makes one of the best uses of online multiplayer features, which no other game has done so far. Fellow players can leave messages and bloodstains, which can warn other players, who are playing their own game of the dangers and perils that lie
ahead.
This almost creates a bond between the community, however, things are taken not one, but two steps further as well. Gamers can be called on to assist other gamers as well, in case they warp to the other player’s game and can help them in their task.
On the other hand, gamers can jump into another person’s game and cause havoc as well, which can be a truly terrifying experience. Fighting Non-Playable Characters is one thing, but fighting another player is an entire new experience. The reason players
need to play Demon’s Souls before Dark Souls is because only then they will be able to appreciate what the second game is all about.
Yes, Dark Souls has a charm of its own, but for players who have played the previous game; its successor is a much more an enriching and fulfilling video game experience.
