Tottenham Hotspur summer signing Clint Dempsey admits that it took him time to settle in at his new role, but is glad to have ended his frustrating start at White Hart Lane and believes his form is slowly improving.
The American international made a last minute summer move to Tottenham from Fulham to become a part of manager Andre Villas-Boas’ new-look Spurs squad.
The midfielder followed former Fulham teammate Moussa Dembele to the North London club, and both players are considered vital additions to Villas-Boas’ team. The latter however has made a bigger impact since his arrival, despite missing the last few games
on account of a hip injury.
Dempsey did not experience the same form as Dembele, and struggled with his new role at the club. Though primarily an attacker, Dempsey mostly plays on the left flank, and is known to cut inside while venturing forward.
At Tottenham, the player has been deployed in a more central attacking role, and visibly struggled to get comfortable in this new position.
However, the player says that he is enjoying his transition to a central position, and also admitted that it took him time to settle in and get comfortable.
The player impressed in Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over West Ham last week, and had a huge part in two of his team’s goals. Dempsey also came close to scoring himself, and was clearly one of Spurs’ best players on the pitch. Talking to reporters, the player
said:
“I’ve been frustrated with not really getting on the ball and impacting games. I was able to give a bit more of an angle and drive with the ball a little bit more, and take some more shots and try to create chances for other people.”
“It’s good to play a part in two of the goals and I was a little bit unlucky not to get one myself. It was a game I enjoyed because I’m a player that needs to get on the ball. I’m better getting it on the half-turn and then facing my opponents, rather than
playing with my back to goal.”
The player is looking forward to a good run in the league after last week’s victory, and hopes the team can replicate this form in the Europa League despite all the recent setbacks, both on and off the pitch.
