Deneen Demourkas hits lead of 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship – Sailing Update
First day of the 2012 BMW Farr 30 World Championship was outstanding because the fleet had tremendous weather conditions that were ideal for complete sailing on the Bay of Laholm waters in Sweden. The fleet participated in three scheduled races to complete
the first day proceedings which featured America’s Deneen Demourkas on top of the standings with six points.
The weather conditions on the Bay of Laholm waters were quite strong because the wind was gusting around the racing area up to 22 knots which was quite strong to maintain the balance but the fleet kept the proceedings intact. However, one of the scheduled
races was abandoned due to the forecast because the shifts were up to 40 knots over the race course which could be troubling at any time.
Demourkas on her boat Groovederci started well in the regatta’s first day and claimed first podium place in the first race of the day. The second race was comparatively a lower finish for her as she hit the third podium place. Meanwhile, in the third race,
she bounced back and finished on second place to compile six points.
Demourkas spoke to the reporters, “’Challenging’ is an understatement; I couldn’t eat anything all day I was such a nervous wreck. As the conditions got funkier and funkier throughout the day I was really pulling my hair out, but my guys and gals held it
together for a good result.”
On the other hand, James Richardson on Barking Mad claimed second place with 11 points. Richardson was unable to make the pace with the fleet leader and tumbled five points down.
While speaking to the local media, Richardson said, “Deneen has been a great friend for a long time, and on shore, we have a great time. But on the water, neither of us give any quarter to the other, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
Top five podium places at the end of Day 1 proceedings:
1. USA 706 Groovederci | 6 points | Deneen Demourkas | Santa Barbara YC
2. USA 50955 Barking Mad | 11 points | James Richardson | New York YC
3. NED 6922 Triple P | 13 points | F Khaleghi Yazdi | YC Scheveningen
4. GER 5373 Topas | 14 points | Dr. Harald Bruening | KYC/WYC/RORC
5. SWE 381 Farr Barr 2 | 14 points | Martin Strandberg | MSS
