Question:

Deniers say that nobody can say for certain how global warming works,can they explain how Gravity 'works'?

Scientists are still debating to this day on the "Theory of Gravity". I don't hear about anybody drifting away from not 'believing' in Gravity!

Explain the "Theory of Light".

Does periodic darkness prove that light doesn't exist?

  1. Global warming is a good thing.  Ice ages bad.

  2. You are posting this question in the wrong section. Gravity is not "global warming".

    I don't see your point, if there is one.

  3. Gravity is a force of attraction only between bodies that have mass. The word 'gravity' comes from the Latin word "gravitas", meaning 'weight'. The force of gravity that one body exerts on another can be expressed as:

    F=(G*M1*M2)/r*r

    F=Force of gravity experienced by bodies.

    G=Gravitational constant , 6.6726 * 10-11 m3 kg-1 s-2.

    M1=mass of body 1

    M2=mass of body 2

    r=radius of body

    Now, can you give me the equation for global warming?  Can you predict the next ice age/warm age?

    The answer is NO!  Earth's mean global temperature depends on solar flux variations, astronomical events, geological events, changes in biomass, changes in albedo, feedback loops, changes in magnetic field, orbital perturbations, changes in the water cycle, and so on.

    You have no equations and can't quantify any of the above variables, as I've done for gravity.  Thank you, peace man!!

    It works because it is a physical law of the universe.  GOD is the ultimate engineer.

    It works because we can use the equation to predict the outcome of a future experiment, for example, the escape velocity of planet Earth.

    Manda, yes I can, using superstrings.  Can you wrap your little brain around that?

  4. Actually, we can explain how global warming "works", mechanically, a lot better than we can for gravity:  You see, there's this big ball of burning gas...it's called the Sun.

    But our understanding of gravitational force allows us to predict with amazing accuracy how two bodies will react in close proximity.  Please illustrate just ONE prediction made by AGW proponents that's come to pass...at all!  What's the formula for AGW?  We know gravity is constant, whatever the cause.  What are the assumed constants in AGW theory (and I don't mean the constant assumption man is "guilty")?

  5. I feel like I'm in "1984"...I was taught the "Law of Gravity," not the "Theory of Gravity!"

  6. You  can make predictions based on the law of gravity and be right.  Can you say the same for temperature predictions?

  7. Not to be a stickler but in theory gravity can be an illusion of parallel 2D space so yes gravity might not exist either and as a result we now often look at the theory of gravity not existing (it open up some great explainations for other phenomena.

    The point you are making I believe is that the effects are here what can we do about it.

    The big question I think you should ask is probably what is the cause of global warming?

  8. There are a couple of important differences between the theory of gravity and the theory of global warming.  Global warming is much more complex, requiring computer models that take into account many different variables, versus simple equations for the force of gravity. Therefore the effects of global warming can be calculated with much less certainty than the everyday effect of gravity.

    The simple equations involved in gravity can be verified by simple experiments.  To verify global warming, we would need several different earths to use for experiments.  Since we don't have that (and Mars and Venus are NOT the same at all) we have to put a reasonable amount of faith in computer climate models.

    We might not really understand the way gravity works any better than we do the way global warming works, but people are more willing to believe that scientists are not liars when the equations are simple and the effects right-in-front-of-your-face obvious.

    How about the way gravity works in a black hole?  Can you use your little equations for that Jazzbo?

    Miss P - don't answer if you don't understand the question.

  9. No they can't, because nobody knows how gravity works.  There are a number of theories of course, some better than others, just like with global warming.

    With global warming we understand the causes far better, in fact.  We can calculate the radiative forcings from the sun, clouds, greenhouse gases, aerosols, etc.

    With gravity, all we can measure are the effects.  The only reason people are so confident about gravity is because the gravitational constant hasn't changed (by a measurable amount) as far as we know.  That doesn't mean it couldn't suddenly change, because we don't know what causes gravity.  Is it a 'graviton'?  Can a 'graviton' change state and suddenly become repulsive instead of attractive?

    Really we know much more about global warming than gravity.  All we know about gravity is that it's an attactive force whose constant hasn't changed as far as we know.  When you think about it, that's not much understanding!  Back when I was doing my undergrad study at Berkeley, the physicists were trying to establish a center to study gravity, in fact.  Unfortunately I don't think they ever got funding for it.

  10. I would say the extremist have more of an issue with Gravity. Seems like they just keep drifting away into space.
