Denis Cotterell says, ‘No ban imposed on training international swimmers’ – Swimming News
One of the most sensational swimming coaches of Australia, Denis Cotterell clarified that no ban has been imposed on him by Australian swimming officials for training international swimmers.
The news of the ban was disclosed by a Daily Newspaper of China earlier this week, which said that Australian officials have imposed ban on Denis Cotterell to train any foreigner swimmers.
Cotterell, who is the coach of Chinese swimming greats, Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen, denied the news and articulated that no such restriction has been inflicted on him by Swimming Australia.
Cotterell is the main reason that the 20-year-old Yang was able to break the long lasting world record of the Australian 1500m freestyle specialist, Grant Hackett, at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
Previously, the Australian coach had trained many national swimmers including Hackett, who took Australia to reach the heights of swimming.
Not only that, the swimming events at 2012 London Games saw a notable improvement in the pace of Yang, who captured four medals at the London Olympics.
On the other hand, Ye Shiwen stunned the crowd and lived up to the expectations of her supporters by seizing gold medals of 200m Individual Medley (IM) and 400m IM at the London Olympics.
Cotterell, who has been engaged in training both Chinese veterans especially Yang for a long time, called the news of the ban “totally erroneous.”
While talking to the Gold Coast Bulletin newspaper, Cotterell said, “I said I wanted to have a break until the end of the year and just see what was happening.”
“I don't know where (the information) comes from... it's just nothing. I don't know who started it. It should just die. The story is the wrong story,” he added.
The Australian coach confirmed that Australian officials would have appreciated more, if he had been training the national swimmers but they have not forced any ban.
Furthermore, the news of the ban was delivered to China Daily by Yang, who told them that Australia has prohibited Cotterell from training overseas swimmers after the down the scale performance of Australian swimmers at these Games.
