Denis Istomin overwhelms David Ferrer in the third round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
A huge upset was seen in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday, when the world number five, David Ferrer of Spain, crashed out of the tournament at the hands of the 51st ranked Uzbek competitor, Denis Istomin.
The fifth seed Spaniard posed an ordinary performance in the match to suffer a heavy defeat in straight sets, 4-6, 3-6, letting Istomin through to the fourth round of the year’s first ATP (association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells,
California, the United States.
The 25-year-old Uzbek played the best tennis of his career to stun the fifth ranked player in an assertive fashion. He took hold of the momentum early in the match and then went on with his impetus to cruise through the two sets
with ease. Istomin suffered a straight-sets defeat from Ferrer in the Beijing two years ago but stamped his authority over the Spanish veteran on Tuesday to force his way to the last-16 of the star-studded tournament in Indian Wells.
Unseeded in the tournament draw, Istomin displayed exceptional serve game to take the better of his superior ranked opponent. His first serve precision was just 59 per cent but he dropped merely six points on it, claiming 24 out
of 30 and banged five aces en route to victory. The Uzbek competitor converted four out of seven break points in the contest, whilst the fifth seed Ferrer could manage just one break point conversion out of his three chances to finish on the losing side in
the end.
Istomin is slated to take on the former US Open champion and the world number nine competitor, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the next matchup to battle for a berth in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open. The Argentinean number
one outplayed the 19th seed Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, in successive sets, 6-2, 7-6(6), to book a date with the surprise competitor, Istomin in the pre-quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open. Del Potro defeated Istomin in the round of 64 at the
Queen’s Club last year and will eye to replicate the similar results in his next encounter as well.
