Denis Kudla and Donald Young advances at Men’s Doubles at US Men’s Clay Court Championship
American wild card entrants, Denis Kudla and Donald Young upset 4th seeded Brazilian pair of Franco Ferreiro and Andre Sa in straight sets on Monday. They registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Brazilian
duo to advance to the second round at the 2011 US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston.
The American tandem displayed their awesome tact in the match to trash the Brazilians out from the River Oaks Country Club in Houston. Though they had poor first serve share and were shaky at moments, they played with great
skills and sent the Brazilian pair all over the court with their perfect co-ordination.
Kudla and Young committed two double faults and had a lower first serve share in the opening set. They even lost their serve once but they converted both breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to clinch the set with
a 6-4 win.
The unseeded Americans played poorly in the final set as they dropped their first serve share and committed two double faults again but saved all the six breakpoints spectacularly. In addition to this, they converted one
out of two breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to win the set with a 6-3 score line.
The 33rd ranked Brazilian pair, who have a 5-4 win loss record this season, had a higher first serve share of 64 percent as compared to the Americans’ 49 percent and they committed zero double faults
but they saved only one out of four breakpoints. In addition to this, Ferreiro and Sa wasted nine breakpoint opportunities and only converted one to their advantage.
The Americans will next face compatriots, John Isner and Sam Querrey, or the German Russian pair of Benjamin Becker and Igor Kunitsyn.
Another duo who advanced to the next round was the Argentinean Russian pair of Carlos Berlocq and Teymuraz Gabashvili. They destroyed the British German combination of Jamie Murray and Mischa Zverev.
The Argentinean Russian team had a poor first serve share of 34 percent as compared to their rivals’ 69 percent but they earned an amazing 70 percent win on it in the opening set. They also lost their serve once but they
converted two out of five breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to clinch the set with a 7-5 win.
Berlocq and Gabashvili perfected their co-ordination in the second set as they had a much higher first serve share this time, committed zero double faults and conceded zero breakpoints. They as they broke their opponents’
serve three times in the final set to reel off six games in a row.
