Denis Kudla rallies past John Patrick in the first qualifier – Brisbane International 2013
American right-hander, Denis Kudla, reached the second qualifying round of the Brisbane International 2013, held at the hard courts of Brisbane, Australia. He nudged past the local challenger, John Patrick and consolidated his
victory, 6(4)-7, 6-4, 7-5, in nearly two hours and 17 minutes.
The higher-ranked American qualifier started the set aggressively but encountered great deal of pressure at the hands of the local native. The duo levelled down the score line after every alternate game, as they desperately wanted
to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes. The initial set ended with a close tiebreaker and eventually Smith clinched the win 7-6(4).
In the second set, the right-hander American contestant cashed on his competitors serve and imposed his dominance. Kudla established his worth by bagging away the initial two games and after that point, he had no turning back.
He broke his challenger’s serve in the fifth game and received a response in the very next game. However, he had a very strong control over the score line and did not miss a single opportunity. The American contender skilfully sustained the front line and
eventually pocketed away victory in the second set with a 6-4 score.
In the decider, the two rivals gave each other a tough competition and the score line levelled down after every alternate game. The two competitors held their serves for the major part of the set but towards the end, the 23-year-old
contestant was unable to sustain his momentum and he bestowed the last two games to the American. Kudla confidently retained his composure and secured the final victory with a 7-5 score.
The 20-year-old American thundered across three aces and committed a single double fault. He secured 61 percent initial serve precision with 17 of 24 first and 10 of 15 second delivery points. He was able to clinch the win as he
pocketed away all of the two break opportunities and his competitor attained just one of the four he crafted. On the other hand, his challenger had 59 percent first serve accuracy, clinching away 14 of 19 first and just five of 13 second serve points in response.
