Denmark, Germany emerge as champions in European Men and Women’s Team Championships
Denmark’s men seized the crown against Germans while Germany took revenge in women category of European Men and Women’s Team Championships finals in Amsterdam yesterday.
On the judgement day of the European Women’s Team Championships, also served up as the qualifiers for The Thomas Cup and Uber Cup finals, set be held in Wuhan, China, Holland captured third position and a trip to China.
In the Men’s final match Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen pushed the Germans on back foot by winning first singles game against his opponent Marc Zwiebler with final score of 21-11 and 21-14.
There was plenty of drama in the next doubles game when The Danish couple Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen had to sweat hard for almost an hour against the German duo Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler.
Denmark went one step close to gold medal when The Danish couple bagged second match point with decisive score of 19-21, 21-11 and 21-18 against their German opponents.
The German shuttler Dieter Domke could not hold the pressure of 2-0 deficit and in the final singles game the German defence last only for 34 minutes when the Danish invader Hans-Kristian Vittinghus sealed the victory with a notable margin of 21-19 and 21-15.
The Danish men, who had been tagged “the invincible Danes’’ because of their brilliant performance in the tournament, hold the tag in the finals also and the German had to go back home with silver medal.
On the other hand, the German female shuttlers settled the grudge with their avenging victory against Denmark in the final contest of European Women’s Team Championships.
Only one shuttler Tine Baun of Denmark was able to hold her nerves, rest of the remaining Danish females failed to stop the German expedition.
Tine Baun clinched the solo match point for the country as she excelled her German rival Juliane Schenk with final score of 21-12 and 21-17 on the score card.
But Germany stormed back when Olga Konon hammered her opponent Karina Jorgensen of Denmark with significant margin of 21-13 and 21-10.
The next doubles encounter put life in the match when German duo Juliane Schenk and Birgit Michels had to fight for more than one hour to nail the Danish couple Line Damkjaer Kruse-Marie Roepke.
The Danish ladies won the first set with 21-9 score on the board but the German duo turned the results in their favour by winning next two sets with 21-17 and 21-16 score on board.
Germany claimed the crown when the next German shuttler Karin Schnaase out classed her Danish challenger Line Kjaersfeldt by scoring 23-21 and 21-18 in third and final singles game of the match.
In the other match for third place in European Women’s Team Championships, Holland not only nailed the Russia but also ended the guess game for the fourth qualifier of Uber Cup Finals set to be held in China.
