Denmark improves to 2-1 by edging out Greece in the third match – Volleyball news
Men’s national volleyball squad of Denmark provided a hard-knock to Greek counterparts in the third match of the 2012 CEV Men’s European League on Sunday.
The Spanish city Teruel set up the field of play for the thrilling match, which ended in only three sets. Denmark posted 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-23) win over Greece and improved to 2-1 in the tournament.
Greece’s No. 4 player Georgios PETREAS staged an eye-catching action on the net and charted match-high 20 points but it proved to be a failing effort for him.
On the other hand, Mads Hartmann DITLEVSEN of Denmark registered team-high 18 points and led his team to splendid straight-set victory.
Greek team was quick to break the ice in the set1 and added first two points of the match. That was the only time when Greece enjoyed better status in the first set. Later on, Danish hotshots took over the scene. They formed nice combos and directed their
shots in the gaps.
Greek libero had a tough time to deal with the speed bombs from the other side of the net. Denmark followed the same strategy and moved to 17-14 at the first technical timeout, which was called by Greek Coach.
The action resumed after the break and Danish top-guns did not stop, which forced the Greeks to ask for the second technical timeout at 15-20. However, nothing worked in Greece’s favour and Denmark claimed first set, 25-21.
In the second set, Greece gave a good competition to Denmark. With better attack and defence, they took an early lead and led the score (17-16) at the second technical timeout. Meanwhile, Denmark bounced back and seized second-set win with two points, 28-26.
Third set was all about Denmark. The Danish led the scores throughout the frame and ended with 25-23 win, which declared Denmark as the winner of the match.
Greece’s head coach, Alekos Leonis shared his thoughts in the following manner. He said, “During two sets, on the second and third periods, we showed a good attitude but we made too many mistakes and Denmark deserved the victory. Denmark played a very good
match, very well organized and they clearly are the surprise of the tournament; we will try to improve for the next leg.”
“I admire and appreciate the effort my guys did today. They did a great job standing in the game and they were able to take advantage of the different situations to come back in the sets when we were down,” said Denmark head coach Fred Sturm.
Next up, the Pool A teams will head to Israel for the third leg matches from June 8-10. Denmark will face the hosts in the first match, while Greece will go against Slovakia. Check back for more updates and news.
