Dennis Orcollo grabs WPA World 8-Ball Championship 2011 title beating Niels Feijen in final
Dennis Orcollo, nicknamed Surigao and RoboCop, clinched his first World 8-Ball title beating Niels Feijen, Netherlands, 10-3 in the final at Fujairah, U.A.E. Orcollo was in the final of world 8-ball
last time in 2007 where he lost to his compatriot Ronato Alcano.
Before the title match, Darren Appleton and David Alcaide started the final day playing for the third position in the tournament. Dominating the match completely, Alcaide spotted the third position
9-2.
The title match started with Filipino’s rack win. Orcollo, winner of Derby City Classic's 9-ball early this year, stormed into the game tremendously in the best-of-19 racks final match. The 32-year-old
sparked his cue on the table beautifully, taking straight first five racks and almost perturbing the Terminator Niels Feijen.
Feijen, 2010 World 8-Ball Championship runner-up, struck back into the battle for the title in the sixth frame. As Orcollo, 2010 World Pool Masters champion, spread the balls on the table breaking
the rack of the sixth game, the 34-year-old Dutch got the opportunity to capitalise. He took the chance very well and got his first rack of the match to put his mark 5-1.
The start of the seventh rack was a bit dry for the Dutch as he tussled on the table with the balls, but yet he made a difficult ball positioning for the 32-year-old Filipino. Orcollo had a tough
table as it took him a while to start his run. He was successful in navigating the game with excellent game-play. Unfortunately, he missed the 8-ball, which rattled in the pocket jaws resulting in Feijen’s turn on the table.
He played some good shots moving to clinch his second rack before he stuck with the 14-ball blocked by the 8-ball from the corner. At the moment, he had three options to settle himself in the game,
sliding through a narrow space between the two to play the 14-ball, playing another shot to move the 14-ball or playing safe to lock the Filipino behind the 13-ball.
He decided to play safe and locked Orcollo behind 13 who played the 8-ball calling it into the corner but to his bad, he missed it providing a vital opportunity to Feijen. The 34-year-old Dutch made
no mistake and scored his second game making the finishing shot.
The thrilling rack win of seventh game gave him a good confidence. He utilised that strength and quickly cleared the table in the next rack to take the match to 5-3. The Dutch was going easy in the
next game before he missed the 4-ball between the corner jaws. Orcollo was waiting for this moment. He bounced back into the game clearing the table 6-3 successfully.
Orcollo, the 2010 Asian Games Nine-ball Singles winner, quickly made it 8-3 after he spread the balls on the table in the 11th game. Feijen got a chance in the 12th game but
he missed a long shot to the corner inviting the Filipino to clear the table which he did easily making it 9-3.
Orcollo needed only one frame to stand out for the first time as the World 8-ball champion. The last table was surely uneasy to play but he cleared it so easily and crashed the Dutch, making him runner-up
again in the World 8-ball Championship.
