NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman sentenced to community service – NBA News
Former NBA player Dennis Rodman has been sentenced to 104 hours of community service after being found guilty last year of failing to pay child support. He was also placed on a 3 year informal probation on the pretext that he keeps
up with child and spousal support payments.
The 51 year old was a star forward in the Chicago Bulls team of the 90’s and along side Michael Jordan, which won three NBA championships. He was known for his rebounding abilities as well as his off-court behaviour, which gave
him the status of a celebrity.
Rodman has been involved in a series of court cases ever since his wife, Michelle Rodman, filed for divorce in 2004. He has two kids with her and has fought a legal battle with her over custody of the kids, which his wife eventually
won.
Orange County Superior Court commissioner Barry Michaelson handed out the decision to Rodman and had some words of advice for the star player as well.
"My suggestion is to use your talents as a motivator, as a fine, fine athlete and as a fine person to assist others in need," said Michaelson.
Rodman was found guilty of failing to pay child support payments for 2009 and 2010. He is still facing additional charges of owing back charges for child support which, according to lawyers of his wife, exceed $800,000. The decision
on these charges will be handed out on June 22nd.
Rodman’s attorney Linnea Willis said that the $800,000 owed in child support from the time when he was demanded to pay $50,000 per month in child support. That amount has now been reduced to $4500 per month and Rodman is now on
time with his payments.
Rodman was said to have been broke but his tax returns from 2010 indicated that he was making around $150,000 per month. His financial manager Peggy King says that he owes significant back taxes.
Rodman has been playing in Asia and Europe, using his star status to make some money, but has admitted to the fact that he is no longer cashing in 6 figure checks he once was when he was playing for the Bulls.
