Dennis Tihara and Cristiano Correa move into Round 3 at Arica World Star Tour – Surfing News
Brazil’s Dennis Tihara and his fellow countryperson Cristiano Correa advanced through into the third round (Round of 32) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Arica World Star Tour presented by Maui and Sons after clinching victory in
their respective Round 2 (Round of 64) heats that went down at the reef-break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Thursday, June 14.
Great Britain’s Tom Butler secured runner-up position in the 15th heat to accompany Tihara into the next round. Brazil’s Marco Polo finished third, while Puerto Rico’s Alejandro Moreda rounded out the bottom-position, consequently getting eliminated
from the competition.
The 16th heat of Round 2 saw Argentina’s Santiago Muniz finish behind Correa in second place to successfully extend his life in the competition as well. His compatriot Santiago Di Pace and Chile’s Cristian Lopez rounded out the third and fourth
position, consequently making an early exit from the competition.
The intimidating barrelling conditions prevailing at the primary event site on day 2 of the competition were bound to put the perseverance of surfers to test. The four-to-six foot waves on offer at the reef-break offered plenty of potent scoring opportunities,
but they also posed a serious threat of injury, something that was seen quite regularly on Wednesday.
Tihara looked in good control during the 15th heat as he took on three talented surfers in a four-man battle. The Brazilian surfer collected a 7.00 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 6.40-point ride, consequently finishing
with a heat-total of 13.40 points.
Butler’s performance was nothing to write home about. However, his efforts for a heat-total of 6.45 points proved sufficient to carry him through into the third round of the competition.
Polo finished in third place with a combined wave-total of 2.40 points, while Moreda finished with a two-wave total of 0.75 points.
The final heat of the second round turned out to be a low-scoring affair, with all four surfers in the battle struggling to find rhythm during the course of the heat.
A heat-total of 4.95 points, comprising of a 1.20 and 3.75-point ride, proved sufficient for Correa to secure victory and thus a spot in the next round.
Muniz's two-wave total of 4.15 points earned him runner-up place and carried him through into the third round.
Di Pace finished in third place with a heat-total of 2.70 points, while Lopez rounded out the bottom-position with a two-wave total of 2.60 points. Both the surfers found themselves ejected from the contention for the event title as a result of their dismissal
performance.
