if a substance has a volume of 2.8×10^2 in^3 and weighing 250 lb, will it float when placed on a reservior of water (given that density of water is 1.0g/mL)? It looks like I have to convert units and calculate the density of the substance, but i don't know how to go about solving the problem...

  1. 280in^3  =  .162 ft^3

    250lb

    d=250lb / .162 ft^3 =  1,542 lb/ft^3 <--density of substance

    dw=62.2 lb / ft^3  <---density of water

    No, I think your dealing with the heaviest substance known to man.
