Hi i just came back from the dentist. my wisdom tooth is infected. I noticed this emergency dentist did not take out my tongue ring while doing an x-ray or cleaning the infected area??~ should i be concerned?i thought jewelry was supposed to come out for x-rays? can i be harmed?

oh && btw it wasn't like the x-ray that scans ur whole head. i had to bite on a piece of plastic and they x-rayed the side of my face that head the infection.

So all in all, does taking xrays with metal in ur body pose any risks? thanx a lot!

  1. Hello...the dental Xray posed no health risk to you...The piece of plastic you bit on is called a "Bite Wing" and when the Xray is taken the Bite Wing covers (as a rule) three to four teeth. The only reason the DDS would have had you remove any kind of jewelry would be when the jewelry would have become part of the area being Xrayed...Jewelry can block out an area and possibly interfere with a proper diagnosis. The same would apply to any part of your body...Good luck and I wish you well.

  2. FYI,

An individual x-ray film can be done with a piercing. If a complete head film is taken called a panoramic radiogaph is taken, then the piercing should be removed.

  3. Nope....it's the tounge ring metal in your body that would be more of a concern.....

  4. If having metal in ur body while having xrays done was harmful to your body, your dentist would have had you remove it. But, because you had it in while getting the xrays done, you'll be fine.

  5. you'll be fine i have a tongue piercing and had the same thing done if it mattered the dentist would of told you to take it out hope i helped:)

  6. i also have a tongue ring and have never had it removed any time ive been to the dentist have the teeth x rays done. you wont be harmed by keeping it in.

  7. They remove the jewelery because the metal creates an image on the radiograph (just a white area shaped like the barbell). If the jewelery isn't in the way, most dental assistants won't bother to remove it.
