  1. Hi,

It is possible that the fillings are pushed in. It can also get pushed out. Usually, with the fillings in the front teeth, you depend on chemical bonding that can get compromised by excessive pressure.

Once that happens, no matter how nicely you place those back to the original position, there WILL be microleakage.

That is why you are not supposed to open anything with your teeth !!!

The only solution will be to get new fillings done.

You mentioned that the x-rays did not reveal anything significant at the last visit. I believe you used your teeth to open something after that visit. So, referring to those x-rays with normal findings do not apply now.

Leaky fillings can be detected by the following ways :

    1. The fillings that seem to have moved will gradually become more unstable. You will feel as if you can move those in and out of the cavities.

    2. It may also feel as if something is stuck between your teeth. That may not hurt, but it will feel very annoying.

    3. You are right. It can get uncomfortable with sweets and cold food.

    4. When the shifting / leaking is pronounced, the defect may show up as an open margin on the x-rays.

    5. Gradually, food will start to get caught underneath and you will run the risk of developing new decay area in that tooth. At that point it will definitely show up on the x-rays.

    6. If food gets caught in there as a routine, you will develop bad mouth odor.

    7. With leaky / displaced fillings it will get hard to floss. It will either get caught or get ripped.

    8. Then again, if the fillings are just loose and you have pushed those back to the original position, you won't be able to tell if there is any microleakage.

In that case, your only bet will be to look for the symptoms of discomfort with the sweets and cold food. However, a more accurate diagnosis can only be done clinically by a dentist.

So, please make an appointment right away to see your dentist.
