Question:

Dentist anaesthetic and permanent numbing?

I went to the dentist and he wants me to get my wisdom teeth out just in the chair while still awake. But he said the anaesthetic he uses has something like 3 or 5 or something like that percent chance that your lip will stay permanently numb!!! Has anyone heard of this?!? I know its only low but it still seems so odd and I don't even like those low chances of never having feeling in my lip again! Have other people been told this by your dentist? Is this normal??

  1. I was told a similar thing when I had mine taken out, but it was only a .5% chance of permanent numbness. Its one of those factoids dentists must inform patients of, like the risk of death if you are put under full anesthesia. Its nothing to be concerned about, and in all likelihood, it may have happened to like 2 people in all the years dentists have been using the product.

  2. actually it is common to be told this don't worry though it will only happen if he hits the nerve

my gf just her wisdom teeth pulled she is fine so don't go crazy over it

    its not bad

  3. of course there is a possibly that the numbing will be permanent. usually it's not permanent throughout the entire spot. i think the odds are one in a million. my friend got all four of her wisdom teeth pulled at once and they actually number her entire mouth and put her to sleep. unfortunately she was one in a million and she can't feel half of her tongue.

think of the pros and cons. usually if you have a good dentist they will do a professional, flawless job. if you don't get those teeth pulled out they could come in and mess up all your other teeth. it's up to you, so choose your decision wisely.

  4. Those odds seem pretty high and permanent numbness would only occur if your dentist damages a sensory nerve with the needle. Perhaps the practitioner is trying to tell you that he is a klutz.

  5. yes it happen to be when they took my right down wisdom it was numb for like 3 months but it really depens on how they do it if the didnt touch the nervous so much i think it less but idk how can you react to it i to vitamines speacilly b12 its good for that
