Denver Broncos’ Peyton Manning: Offensive play depends on what Mike McCoy decides – NFL News
Denver Broncos’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, has said that even though he is taking an active role in the team’s offseason workout programme, the offensive play of the team will be decided by offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy.
Peyton, who has been playing in the National Football League (NFL) since 1998, has plenty of experience and it comes to no one’s surprise that the veteran quarterback is taking a leading role at Broncos.
Peyton’s stature can be ascertained by reviewing the performance of Indianapolis Colts, his former team, who could only win two games in the last season in which Peyton did not play a single game owing to a neck injury.
Peyton’s absence cost Colts the season and the team eventually parted ways with the quarterback, who has now joined Broncos.
During the workouts, Peyton guided many players of the offensive unit and the players seem equally impressed by him.
Broncos’ wide receiver, Andre Caldwell, said of Peyton earlier:
“He’s literally leading everything. He’s setting us up, putting us in the right positions."
However, Peyton thinks that he is not overshadowing the role of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. He has said that it is up to McCoy to decide the strategies the offensive unit will follow on the field and said that he will also follow McCoy’s decisions.
Peyton said:
"What we are going to do (offensively) here depends on what Mike McCoy decides, based on the players we have, and I'm open to whatever direction that takes."
Peyton spent 14 years at Indianapolis and played under the same system. It must have been difficult for him to adjust to a new system, but the quarterback thinks of it as a challenge for which he is really excited.
He said:
“You're in a comfort zone and have a sense of security when you're in the same system with the same coach for 14 years, but I'm thrilled with the challenge of learning a new terminology.”
Last season, Broncos qualified for the playoffs by stunning many opponents. This time around, the team management is expecting an improved performance from the players especially in the presence of Peyton Manning.
Only time will tell whether the veteran lives up to the expectations or not.
