Denver Broncos appoint John Fox as head coach
John Fox is certainly capable of turning around a struggling team, seeing as he has been able to do it before. The Denver Broncos hope that he will be able to make a repeat performance.
Out of five candidates, Fox was deemed as the best choice to replace Josh McDaniels. McDaniels was fired on 6 December following an embarrassing videotaping scandal, known as Spygate II, and the Broncos’ worst performance in
almost 40 years.
The horrible season resulted in the front office being restructured, and legendary Hall of Famer John Elway being brought in as the team’s chief football executive. On Thursday, the new chief football executive hired the 55-year-old
ex-Carolina Panthers coach on a four-year contract.
"For what this building needed, John Fox was the perfect fit for us," Elway said outside the team facility before driving off in his Bentley.
Elway praised Fox’s all-round football philosophy. He said "The one thing I saw in John he had great football wisdom. And I think that comes with the experience that he has. But not only does he have it on the defensive side,
but overall his football wisdom is what won us over."
Elway made the news of the appointment public by posting it to Twitter. The team has been trying be more open to the public in the hope that crestfallen fans will come back to support the team.
Fox expressed his excitement at taking charge of the Broncos in a statement, which read, "I am very thankful to Pat Bowlen and John Elway for giving me the opportunity to coach a football team with such a proud tradition. The
Broncos have a culture of winning, and I am excited to continue that legacy. I can't wait to get to work."
However, his job will be as difficult as leveling the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
The Broncos ended their season with the worst record in franchise history, 4-12. The Broncos are lucky to own the second pick in the draft and need a major turnaround, much like the Panthers needed when Fox was appointed their
head coach in 2002 after a 1-15 season. Fox improved them to 7-9 in his first year and then took them to the Super Bowl in his second.
"I think the rebuild probably is going to require a little bit more on defence than offence but you know, I think I have a blueprint that we executed in Carolina, and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work here in Denver,"
Fox said before his interview with the Broncos on Wednesday.
The Panthers did not wish to renew Fox’s contract after being the worst team in the league for the 2010 season, with a 2-14 record. However, he had been able to get the team to the Super Bowl in 2004.
Elway and the rest of the Broncos are hoping that he will be able to do the same for them.
