Denver Broncos name Knowshon Moreno as backup running back for this season – NFL News
Denver Broncos have named their former first-round pick Knowshon Moreno as the no. 2 running back for the 2012 season.
Broncos announced the news on Friday, September 07, 2012. It is delightful news for Moreno who has made a long and hard struggle to keep himself on the roster this season.
Announcing the news in front of the media after morning practice session, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said:
"(Moreno) worked extremely hard, and he deserves a lot of the credit for that, I think he saw what Willis had done over his career after a knee injury (in 2002), and that gave him a little bit of motivation. He's made the most of every opportunity we've
given him."
Broncos starting running back Willis McGahee got a serious knee injury in 2002 in his time at the University of Miami. McGahee then recovered to make an outstanding professional career.
Moreno, 25, has spent a considerable amount of time out of the field after injuring his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in October last year.
While playing against Kansas City Chiefs in the 2011 season, Moreno got injured and was unable to play in the remaining season. Moreno then went on to have a surgery only a few days after getting injured.
There were some serious concerns that Moreno would remain on the injured reserve (IR) list come the start of the new season.
Although most of the running backs face a decrease in output after getting ankle injuries, Moreno showed good performance in the preseason after getting 13 rushing plays while covering 64 yards.
Broncos head coach John Elway recently appreciated Moreno’s successful return to form. He said:
"Knowshon probably makes us a better football team."
Before the start of the preseason, most of the analysts predicted that Moreno would be replaced by rookie Ronnie Hillman on the roster.
Hillman then suffered a hamstring injury during the offseason training camp which immensely decreased his output.
Moreno was drafted by Broncos in the first round (12th overall pick) of the 2010 draft. Last season, he played seven games and scored one touchdown while covering 179 rushing yards.
