Denver Broncos sign QB Caleb Hanie as backup for Peyton Manning - NFL News
Free agent and ex-Chicago Bears backup quarterback Caleb Hanie has reportedly agreed to join the Denver Broncos as backup to Peyton Manning.
The franchise announced the signing of Hanie on a new two-year deal on Sunday just a few days after trading quarterback Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.
Hanie will reprise his role as backup at the Broncos and give cover for veteran quarterback Peyton Manning who put pen to paper at Denver early last week.
The young quarterback spent four years as backup to Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler making just four career appearances as starter for the franchise all of which came in the 2011-12 season.
The Bears lost Cutler to a broken thumb after week 11 in the season and coach Lovie Smith gave Hanie the opportunity to lead the then playoff bound Bears for the final four games of the season.
Hanie though disappointed, with all his starts ending in disappointing losses for Chicago as they missed out on the playoff spots.
The quarterback completed just 50% of his passes in his four starts as he passed for a total of 613-yards and made just three touchdown passes while also throwing nine interceptions.
The four-game losing run all but ended Chicago’s chances of reaching the wild card rounds of the playoffs and he was replaced by Josh McCown for the final two games against Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
McCown performed better and ended up 1-1 in his two starts with a win over the Minnesota Vikings as the Bears ended the 2011-12 season with an 8-8 record.
Chicago though did not attempt to give Hanie a contract extension and he has now joined the Denver Broncos and will hope to perform much better when called upon by his new team.
Hanie will now join Peyton Manning and Adam Weber in the Broncos three man quarterback roster.
Denver ended the 2011-12 regular season as the American Football Conference (AFC) West division champions after Tim Tebow turned around their fortunes with some mesmerising last quarter performances.
The Broncos reached the divisional round of the playoffs after defeating Pittsburgh Steelers in an epic overtime victory with Tebow throwing the winning touchdown pass on the first play of overtime.
With Manning now leading their offence the Broncos will hope to go one better and hope that the veteran is back to his brilliant best as they take another crack at the playoff rounds in 2012-13.
