Denver Broncos waive off quarterback Kyle Orton – NFL News
Things have now become bleak for Kyle Orton as he has been waived off by the Denver Broncos. The Broncos following a 1-4 start released the veteran quarterback on Tuesday.
"I spoke with Kyle earlier today and thanked him for everything he did for the Broncos. He was a true professional throughout this season. I've got a great deal of respect for him.” Broncos Coach John Fox said.
"This was the right decision for our football team. We feel good about our quarterback group, and this gives Kyle an opportunity to help another team and showcase his talents."
Orton must adhere to the waiver rules by which any team can pick him by paying him the remainder of the salary he has left out of his $8.8 million this year. In case he is not claimed by any team, he will become a free agent.
There are three likely probabilities for Orton. One is the Chicago Bears who traded him two years back to the Broncos. The Bears are in a need for a quarterback as Jay Cutler is out of action with a broken thumb and is scheduled
for a surgery on Wednesday. Cutler maybe off the field for weeks and Orton may find an opportunity.
Another probability are the Kansas City Chiefs, who have lost their quarterback to a hand injury. Matt Cassel has been put on the injured reserve following a surgery leaving the ground ripe for Orton. Cassel’s replacement Tyler
Palko fared poorly in his starting game with a 34-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday.
Yet another possibility for Orton might be the Houston Texans. The Texans have Matt Schaub off the field for weeks with a right foot injury. Currently Schaub has been replaced with Matt Leinart.
Broncos executive John Elway said that it would be better for both the team and Kyle if he caught on with another team.
"Kyle is going to have more options in the NFL. He'll get an opportunity to play somewhere else, and we wish him the best of luck." Elway said.
Elway has also said that he did not have Tim Tebow in mind as the quarterback for a long time and stressed that Tebow needed to improve his passes and moves on third downs.
Who will replace Orton on the roster is yet to be seen, however, rookie quarterback Adam Weber seems like the likely choice.
